When Vaud was conquered by Bern in 1536, the transit traffic between the West and Bern gained significant importance. Wine was one of the most important transport goods. This was loaded onto large ships in Yverdon, rowed over Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Murten to Murten, and from there transported by horse-drawn carriages to Gümmenen. Since there were always problems with adulterated wine (because the barrels were tapped on the way and refilled with water), the rest stops were fixed and monitored.
