The vast majority of advertisers are genuine. A few basic rules reliably reveal dubious offers.

What to watch for

• Never pay a deposit or rent before you have viewed the property and signed a contract.
• Do not transfer money abroad and do not use anonymous cash-transfer services.
• Be suspicious of prices well below the market.
• The advertiser is “away” and can only hand over via a key service? A classic scam pattern.
• Do not hand over ID copies or pay slips before mutual interest is established.
