The entire Grossbasel city center is easily and quickly accessible on foot. The SBB train station and the Badische Bahnhof are connected by a direct bus link. The Steinengraben is located in the area of the historic suburbs, which immediately and ring-shaped adjoin the old town of Grossbasel. The outer boundary corresponds to the renewed and expanded city wall after the great earthquake of 1356. This outer wall also included the suburbs, which once lay before the old enclosure built around 1200. When Basel threatened to burst at the seams again in the mid-19th century, this last fortification was also demolished. Basel thus transformed into an open, expanding city.
