Brissago is known above all for its islands and botanical garden, where about 1500 different plant species thrive thanks to the mild climate, including palms, bamboo, eucalyptus, kiwi and bananas. The garden was created in 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger and, from 1927, was expanded by the subsequent owner of the islands, the wealthy businessman Max Emden.
