Origins and early settlement The Saas Valley itself has been visited since the Bronze Age (archaeological finds such as cupped stones). The actual permanent settlement took place in the Middle Ages by immigrants from the Visp area. The settlement structure traditionally consisted of scattered hamlets (e.g. Unter dem Berg, Tamatten, also Bodmen), which were agriculturally shaped. The name "Bodmen" (Valais dialect) typically points to flatter, usable soils in the valley floor - i.e. ideal areas for agriculture. Bodmen as a historical settlement The settlement of Bodmen has existed for several centuries. A preserved larch house bears the date 1773, which is a concrete indication of the building activity in the 18th century. Like many hamlets in the Saas Valley, Bodmen was originally a small peasant scattered settlement, consisting of residential houses, stables and haylofts. Society and life in the valley Until the late Middle Ages, the entire Saas Valley was a unit that divided into several municipalities in 1392. Community life was regulated by so-called peasant guilds (15th-18th centuries), which organized the use of alps, water and land. The population lived largely self-sufficiently from agriculture and alpine farming for a long time. Change in the 19th and 20th centuries With the emerging alpinism and tourism in the 19th century, the first guest businesses emerged in the valley. In Bodmen itself, a café was opened around 1909 (Café Bodmen), which later changed owners several times. A small cultural-historical specialty: The first raclette dishes were served in the Saas Valley around 1929. Development and modernization The major change came with the construction of the road into the Saas Valley (1929-1938), which made Saas-Grund and its hamlets more accessible. After that, the region developed increasingly touristically, while the original agriculture receded. Bodmen today (historically grown image) Today, Bodmen is: a quiet hamlet between Saas-Grund and Saas-Fee, characterized by old Valais wooden buildings, embedded in forest and meadow landscapes, partly used for tourism (restaurants, hiking trails). Conclusion Bodmen is not a "village with its own history" in the classical sense, but a typical historic Valais hamlet: arisen from peasant use, inhabited for centuries, closely intertwined with the development of Saas-Grund and the entire Saas Valley, later shaped by tourism, without completely losing its original character.
